There's little doubt that beyond the impact of a chewed sweater or paw print kitchen floor, pets bring about many physiological reactions in humans that are just as likely to bring our blood pressure down as up. In fact, the therapeutic value of pets has long been recognized in nursing care centers and hospitals. As with all the pets we feature on this site, the term "pets" is a bit of a misnomer because many of the animals that perform the tasks we highlight are trained and carefully selected to perform the specific tasks we find so valuable. Below, we share with you some of the organizations who specialize in these efforts. Please visit our guests and our sponsors below. |

ITA gently pushes the limits of possibilities in each of its therapeutic sessions, so that more therapists, educators and other professionals will recognize the great power of their animals to motivate their clients and spark healing moments, both short- and long-term. And they try to foster an atmosphere that will encourage creative thinking.
The best example of this philosophy to date is ITA's Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program, a truly original adaptation of ITA's AAT/AAA work which, in less than five years, has already had a broad impact on the public as well as the world of Assistance Therapy using animals. The first literacy program to utilize therapy animals to help children improve their reading skills, ITA has now trained over 50 of its own volunteers and over 180 therapy teams in 34 other states to R.E.A.D. with children!
For further information on ITA and its programs and services, please email the Executive Director Kathy at kathy@therapyanimals.org or visit their website (www.therapyanimals.org). You can also call them at 801-272-3439.
